From Academia to Public Policy: Research Justice and Scholar Activism in Practice
About this event
Coined by DataCenter, an Oakland-based community research organization, “research justice” is a strategic framework that seeks to transform structural inequities in research and recognize marginalized communities as experts and key stakeholders in the management of the data and knowledge produced. But what does this truly look like in practice within academia, the public sector, and beyond?
Join us for a conversation about how new forms of knowledge production can challenge traditional research hierarchies and mobilize the leadership of those directly impacted by the research. By acknowledging and engaging subaltern ways of knowing, we will explore how research justice as a concept and movement can contribute to positive changes in public policy; constructive, community-oriented applications of research; and the fulfillment of the university’s potential as a conduit for social good as defined by local communities themselves.
