Racism in the Workplace and the Effects of Racial Trauma on African American Executives
Session Description:
Racial traumas in America are dangerous incidents related to real or perceived experiences of discrimination preventing the ability to cope (Comas-Diaz, et al., 2019). Traumatic stress results from directly experiencing dangerous events, and also from the related emotional pain (Johnson, et al., 2017). This includes stressors such as unemployment. As recently as 1991 Title VII amendments to the Civil Rights Act were passed to prevent discrimination in the recruitment and hiring process; however, these protections are not enforced when considering promotions (McCluney, et al., 2018).
